A discussion with my brother about mom’n’dad and our new family situation brought the Kinks’ “Life is Complicated” song to mind. Here are the lyrics to their 1971 offering:
Well I woke this morning with a pain in my neck,
A pain in my heart and a pain in my chest,
I went to the doctor and the good doctor said,
You gotta slow down your life or you’re gonna be dead,
Cut out the struggle and strife,
It only complicates your life.
Well I cut down women, I cut out booze,
I stopped ironing my shirts, cleaning my shoes,
I stopped going to work, stopped reading the news,
I sit and twiddle my thumbs cos I got nothing to do,
Minimal exercise,
To help uncomplicate my life,
Gotta stand and face it life is so complicated,
Ladi dah di dahdah, ladi dah di dah dah,
You gotta get away from the complicated life, son,
Life is overrated, life is complicated,
Must alleviate this complicated life.

Fleshmap’s awesome visualization offers a cloud-like view of which body parts are most often cited by musical genre. Hip-hop, for instance, is about the ass. Metal? The eyes. Gospel, the hands. [mefi]
Jeremy Larson has a new album coming out soon. What we’ve heard so far is absolutely some of the highest caliber music to come out of Springfield in some time.
For those that aren’t familiar, Jeremy has a rather artistic feel (think Bjork meets Radiohead meets The Flaming Lips meets Sigur Ros). Now that’s it’s done…he needs your help. Read on…
From Jeremy’s latest Myspace blog:
The New Album Is FINISHED!
As of yesterday, the new album is finished. The title of the album will be “Salvation Club”. There were 13 songs going into mastering, and I ended up cutting one, so there will be 12 songs. We should be able to announce a release date this week! Thank you all for staying tuned in to all of the new material. I’m thankful that you all have had a chance to hear samples of the album, however, I must say that the mixed/mastered version are like [...]
This song is not Anti-Bush. It’s playing off of the fact that whenever he says “duty,” it sounds like “doodie.”
And sorry about the badger song theme thing. Please enjoy “W’s Duty” by Jonathan Coulton.
Thanks.
And for the scenery.
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale added another little boy to their family with the birth of their son, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale, yesterday in Los Angeles. Congrats to them, but why did they give their kid a name like that? Kingston is cute and then you go and name the next one something that instantly makes me think of this:
This has Cat Power written all over it. You can hear it specifically on the L in Holiday. That exhaled, breathy note or so descent is pure Chan Marshall. No complaints here.
A finger picked, reverb laden acoustic opens the song, followed by harmonized and breathy vocals, a slow stepping beat, and a warm synth low in the mix. Strong production throughout, leaning thankfully towards the quiet/dynamic, letting the song and not volume pull in the listener.
Enough of me….listen:
